Montblanc introduces its annual Patron of Art Edition 2013 commemorating the life and influence of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, one of the most prominent patrons of the Italian Renaissance and protector of the great Leonardo Da Vinci and other outstanding artists. For 22 years, the Patron of Arts Edition has celebrated the contribution of a different historical patron of the arts and coincides with the annual Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Awards, an honour established in 1992 to recognize the commitment of modern day patrons of the arts in 12 countries. For 15 years, starting in the 1490s, Da Vinci worked for Sforza, during which time he created two of his best-known works for his patron: *The Last Supper* in the convent church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and *The Lady with an Ermine*. Sforza*s legendary black armour is symbolized on the Limited Edition by the gleaming black lacquer with .925 sterling silver inlays. The cap and clip design of this Limited Edition 4810 are inspired by the striking cylindrical towers of the Castello Sforzesco (the expansion of which was commissioned by Sforza), and the pen*s fittings replicate Leonardo da Vinci*s ceiling fresco from the *Sala delle Asse* in the Milanese castle. To honour this clever diplomat and intriguer, who was overthrown by the French King Louis XII after forming an alliance against France in 1499, the *testone*, a coin of the Italian Renaissance, was minted. Its distinctive embossments are immortalized on the cap ring. The .750 rhodium plated solid gold nib of the edition is engraved with the Duke*s coat of arms, a final acknowledgement to a lasting cultural legacy. The .925 sterling silver, piston filled fountain pen is crowned with the Montblanc star in white precious resin.

The Montblanc Limited Edition Joseph II honours a revolutionary monarch and one of the greatest supporters of W.A. Mozart. With delicate features of the royal crest ornaments, the fascinating writing instrument presents a truly royal tribute to the namesake of this edition. Born as the first son of Empress Maria Theresa and German Emperor Francis I, Joseph grew up with his sister Marie Antoinette and his other siblings in Vienna, Austria. In 1764, Joseph II acceded to the throne, becoming King of the Romans (King in Germany) and only one year later the Emperor of the Roman Empire. In contrast to his mother, who still insisted on the old reforms, Joseph was already a proponent of enlightened ideas. Under his reign, he started a complete reform of the legal system. In this respect he abolished brutal punishment and the death penalty in most instances and imposed the principle of complete equality of treatment for all offenders. He ended censorship of the press and theatre. With his enlightenment policy, Joseph II implemented extensive cultural reforms whereby the cultural city of Vienna was in revival. As an avid music lover, the monarch was especially fascinated by piano concerts of an aspiring artist: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and opened the way for Mozart to become one of the greatest composers in music history. The red and white lacquer of the Limited Edition 4810 is reminiscent of the national colours of Austria. Its design is inspired by the imperial coat of arms of the monarch, inscribed on the 18 kt champagne gold nib as a delicate engraving. The champagne gold plated fittings on the cap and barrel complete this edition, dedicated to one of the greatest supporters of Mozart. All these unique features of finest craftsmanship make this edition a true homage to Joseph II, one of the most important patron of arts of his time.

The new Montblanc Patron of the Arts 2011 Limited Edition pays tribute to Gaius Maecenas, a Roman diplomat widely regarded as the founding father of cultural patronage. Maecenas (70 B.C. – 8 B.C.) recognized the genius of the poets of his time, including Horace and Virgil, and offered them full financial support. Limited to 4,810 pieces, which corresponds to the height of the Mont Blanc Mountain in meters, the Maecenas Limited Edition is inspired by the columns of Roman temples; the barrel is created in marbled lacquer, reflecting the magnificent architecture of ancient Rome. The first verse of an ode to Maecenas, composed by Horace, appears on the cap, crafted, as are its rings, in solid .925 sterling silver. A finely-engraved laurel wreath encircles the top ring and the inscription *Gaius Cilnius Maecenas* is engraved on the cap band. The base of the end cap is graced with an inlaid reproduction of an ancient Roman coin stamped with a likeness of Maecenas. The impressive clip is forged in the shape of an ancient Roman sword. Fine engravings of a laurel wreath and the Roman numerals MMXI ennoble the rhodium-plated 18 kt gold nib. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who achieved worldwide renown as a writer under the pseudonym of Mark Twain, was born in Missouri in 1835. He left school at 11 years old and in 1857, he had himself trained as a steersman. For several years piloted a Mississippi steamboat. It is from this period that his literary pseudonym emerged: the cry of *Mark Twain* signalled a navigable depth of Two Fathoms. In his literary works, Twain recalled the defining period of his life spent as a steersman on the Mississippi. The design of the writing instrument is also inspired by the river that had a lasting influence on Twain and his work.
The sinuous curving lines on cap and barrel, made of deep-blue precious resin, reflect the shallow waves of the river. The top of the cap is shaped to resemble the Mississippi steamboat chimneys, whose steam is illustrated by ivory-coloured precious resin. The clip is formed by a stylized jew*s harp (a small musical instrument which is held against the teeth or lips, and plucked with the fingers, that was popular in the Southern states during this era). Platinum-plated mountings and the ivory-coloured Montblanc emblem complete the distinctive character of the writing instrument. The crowning features of this unique Limited Edition are Twain*s signature and the number of the pen on the cap ring, and the two fathoms engraved on the rhodium-plated 18 kt gold nib. The limited edition marks the centenary of Mark Twain’s death in 2010. Limited to: 12,000 piston-fill fountain pens;15,000 ball pens; 6,000 rollerballs; and 3,000 sets consisting of fountain pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil.

By the time Francis ascended the throne in 1515,the Renaissance had clearly arrived in France, and Francis was an important supporter of the change. Francis became a major patron of the arts. He lent his support to many of the greatest artists of his time and encouraged them to come to France. Some did work for him, including such greats as Andrea del Sarto, and Leonardo da Vinci, whom Francis convinced to leave Italy in the last part of his life. While Leonardo did little painting in his years in France, he brought with him many of his great works, such as the Mona Lisa, and these stayed in France upon his death. When Francis ascended the throne, the royal palaces were decorated with only a scattering of great paintings, and not a single piece of sculpture either ancient or modern. It is during Francis's reign that the magnificent art collection of the French kings that can still be seen in the Louvre was truly begun. Francis also supported a number of major writers of the period and was a poet himself. Francis worked hard at improving the royal library. Francis employed agents in Italy looking for rare books and manuscripts, just as he had looked for art works. During his reign the size of the library increased greatly. Not only did Francis expand the library but he read the books he bought for it, a much rarer feat in the royal annals. Francis set an important precedent by opening his library to scholars from around the world in order to facilitate the diffusion of knowledge. The fountain pen is enhanced with an 18kt nib, available in M & F. Piston Fill.

The Montblanc 2007 Writers Edition “William Faulkner” is dedicated to the literary master of modernism. The shape and surface of this unique writing instrument are reminiscent of the novelist’s early creative period and the style of art deco. The black-brown precious resin, shimmering like mother-of-pearl, meets the bright brilliance of the platinum finish with its subtle ring structure. This represents a shift in point of view as we encounter it in Faulkner’s works. On the cap, the precious resin is also adorned by the writer’s original signature. The hand-crafted nib is particularly distinct. It is a reference to another great passion of the writer: aerobatics. Faulkner’s biplane glides through layer after layer of clouds on the platinum-plated 18Kt gold nib, available in M,F, and B. Piston fill.

The 2006 Writers Edition fountain pen is a medium-sized piston-filler with gold-plated fittings. Born in 1819 in Chorley, Lancashire, Henry Tate went on to become a successful merchant and partner in the John Wright & Co. sugar refinery, where he eventually became owner and millionaire after he patented a means of cutting sugar into dice-sized cubes. Early in his career he began a long legacy of devoting large sums of his money to philanthropic and educational purposes, including Liverpool University College, Harris Manchester College, and Oxford University. In the early 1890s he became a great patron of pre-Raphaelite artists and housed his collection in a gallery built at his house in Streatham. Eventually he built the National Gallery of British Art, which became known as the Tate Gallery. Montblanc’s tributary platinum-plated pen is based on the cartridge-filler Boheme big size with a retractable nib. Rich cognac-coloured lacquer inlays decorate the guilloched surfaces, and a platinum-plated 18k nib with a sugar plant engraving delivers lines of exquisite detail on the page.

When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin. This first sentence of Kafka's masterpiece novella, The Metamorphosis, is one representation of the harrowing, though absurdly comic manner in which he meditated on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation. Born in 1883 in Prague, most of the works for which he is known, The Trial, The Castle, and Amerika were published after his death in 1924, and have tremendously impacted and influenced the world's understanding of modern man's predicament. Montblanc celebrates Kafka's contribution to literature with their Limited Writer's Edition writing instrument, a fascinating blend of dark red resin with a semi-transparent effect. The shape of the pen forms a bizarre but appropriate movement from square to round. The presentation is made complete with sterling clip and fittings, an exceptional design rhodium-plated 18k gold nib, and a special book box.

The wealthiest man in America by the turn of the 20th century, financier and industrial organizer John Pierpont Morgan used his network of banks and industry to stabilize currency, act as the Central Bank and Federal Reserve in the U.S. when none existed, standardize the nation's railroads, and form the world’s first billion-dollar corporation, U.S. Steel. A notable collector of books, pictures, and other art objects, he loaned and gave much of it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, of which he was a founder and president, established the Morgan Library in New York, and was a generous benefactor of the American Museum of Natural History, Harvard University, and the New York trade schools. Montblanc’s tribute rhodium-plated 18k gold nib fountain pen is based on piston filler 146 size. The 4810 version's (4.810 pens produced) unique cap is a finely woven structure of carbon and 925 sterling silver, and the fittings and barrel are pinstripe guilloched sterling. Enclosed in special lacquered box.

“I will only travel in my thoughts now”, promised Jules Verne, and he duly kept his word by describing amazing journeys to the moon and to the mysterious depths of the sea. In doing so, he created ideas that his contemporaries found both radically new and utterly fascinating. Today Jules Verne is regarded throughout the world as the inventor of science fiction.“All around stretches the blue expanse of the ocean, broken only by the successive wave of a guilloche pattern that laps around the barrel deep within the highly polished lacquer…” This vivid description may sound like something out of Jules Verne, but it becomes reality in the Montblanc Jules Verne Limited Edition pen dedicated to the famous writer. The antique diver’s helmet engraved on the rhodium-plated 18-carat gold nib entices you to journey 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, while the platinum-plated trim and ivory-colored star add the perfect finishing touches to this exquisite writing instrument. The cap also features a very personal link to the author in the shape of his facsimile signature.

An example of the American dream made real, F. Scott Fitgerald achieved fame and wealth early in his life. His novels, especially The Great Gatsby, became hallmarks of the Jazz age and documentations of the fashionable society life in the glamorous twenties. His characterizations described people with engaging closeness yet critical distance; in essence, he foreshadowed how glamour and decadence would lead to his own downfall. This idol of the dazzling twenties is commemorated by Montblanc with a gorgeous new limited edition pen. The body is comprised of Montblanc’s classic precious black resin contrasted next to a marbled pearl white resin. The resin is accented with sterling silver rings and a sterling silver clip. Both the clip and the engraving on the nib are designed in an architectural motif reminiscent of the twenties’ art deco style.

The barrel is created from a fine resin coloured a rich grey-green to reflect the English countryside. The fluted cap is sterling silver, and the 18 ct. nib is decorated with a monogram of the writer's initials.
