Nine orders of angels encircle the cap, comprising the ‘Primum Mobile’ – a ninth cosmological sphere around which all else rotates. They rise towards three shining discs on the cap top, elaborating Dante’s visualization of God as the holy trinity. Glorifications on blind cap, cap rings and clip add period-correct ornamentation. This reincarnation is dark, gritty and raw, with a plotline that focuses on the young Bruce Wayne’s early crimefighting career. In sync with the movie’s ethos, our design boasts extreme, tactical styling with engineering, materials and finishing to match. It is built from 5-axis CNC-milled Grade 2 titanium, embellished with black ruthenium polished brass and stainless steel.
Brass components are made using machine-turning and lost-wax casting – with the latter technique used for the cap’s complex appendages and a Batman emblem piece set in the barrel. This same marking appears in laser engraving on the steel cap disc. When picking up a Montegrappa Ammiraglio (or, Admiral), one feels not just the perfect balance of the pen itself, but the culmination of a century of craftsmanship. These pens are, quite simply, beautiful. What first thing you’ll notice about this pen is the four stratified colorways that comes in the Admiral set. A unique blend of colors is at once vibrant while not being ostentatious. It’s this balance of subtlety and art that has become a hallmark of Montegrappa’s design aesthetic. I am personally drawn to the Samba color, while others may love the Menta, a white and turquoise blend that’s as cool as the name implies.For me, I’m still learning about fountain pens, and the Admiral collection is the perfect entre into the intelligence and craftsmanship that goes into these pens. For example, this is the first time I have been able to write with a #8 nib. The standard nibs that I’ve written with before are #5’s and #6’s. The #8 gives a bolder finish the writing experiencing while applying a bit more wetness to the ink. I like this handling more than Montegrappa’s more diminutive cousins, offering me a rounded writing experiencing without taking away from the weight of the pen. The larger nib, in fact, complements the body well. And speaking of the body, the Admiral is another thoughtful design element of this pen. Based on an earlier Sailor archive model, this design finishes with a broader cap than the barrel with the tiniest bit of curvature as it reaches the finial. It’s this attention to the finer points of the pen which really make me appreciate the Admirals when admiring the pen on my desk. As with most businesses that are dedicated to artisanal quality and heritage design, it’s the small details which add up to a beautiful experience. The Admiral set is no different. The barrel artwork was designed using traditional maki-e lacquer work and finished with a sprinkling of gold dust using the togidashi polishing technique. Ginkgo trees are one of the oldest living tree species in the world. Ginkgo trees live for thousands of years and have no close relatives in nature. For this reason, the ginkgo’s beautiful, fan shaped leaves are used to symbolize longevity in Japanese art. Because of their thick bark, ginkgo trees are also known to retain a great deal of moisture, making them resistant to fire and able to withstand even the most intense blaze. In Japan, ginkgo trees are planted in important locations such as Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, not only to be aesthetically pleasing but also to protect the buildings from possible fire. The unusual fan shape of the foliage flutters in the slightest breeze. In the spring and summer time, they are a beautiful, bright green. A special limited edition, “Shape of a Heart” will be released from the #3776 CENTURY series with “Slip & Seal Mechanism” that prevents ink from drying out. Two heart-shaped pieces, which are punched out to make the breather hole on the pen nib, are placed together with crystals in the dome at the top of the pen. While the heart pieces are usually melted down and reused as a material, the new “Shape of a Heart” model incorporates them in the design. The pair of heart-shaped pieces enclosed in the dome gives a feeling of connection with your partner, making it an ideal gift for someone precious. The first commemorative model features two gold hearts-shaped pieces while the black body applied with pink-gold finished nib, clip and trim represents a design unique to the limited model.
